About

Calverton Calling is a community oral history project rooted in Calverton, Nottinghamshire, a former mining village with a rich and largely unrecorded history. Working with older residents, we're capturing the stories, memories, and voices of people who have lived through Calverton's transformation over decades.

These are stories that matter. As communities like Calverton change, the lived experience of the people who built them risks being lost. Oral history is how we make sure that doesn't happen.

The Telephone Box

Our custom-made telephone box has been designed as an interactive listening station. Step inside and pick up the phone to hear voices and memories from the Calverton community. Then press zero to add your own story to the archive.

The box is decorated with 24 fused-glass panels, created during workshops in collaboration with number8glass. Each panel reflects an individual story and personal connection to the village.

“I think the community is quite nice, I see the same people and everyone's really nice, everyone's lovely, […] yeah I think that's the best thing, it's a small town but everyone knows each other and gets along.”

“I remember [my childhood] quite vividly and where we lived, you know, everybody knew everybody up down the streets. We just played football on the road, because there's very few cars about. So you'd just put a couple of shirts down and play football on the road”
